St Stephen's Church, Willington
A Willington church is casting its giant nets wide, capturing people’s imaginations while hauling crowds into its huge art installation and inland beaches.
The display – covering St Stephen’s Church outside and in – contains hundreds of brightly coloured sea creatures and watery scenes imaginatively made and designed by its community and congregation.
The Miracle of Fish event is part of a month of activities for families including, crafts games and music events taking place at the church just off the A690 at the Durham end of the town.
The theme of fish raises awareness of marine life, ecology and the environment and is further inspired by Bible stories and the secret Christian symbol of the fish ICTHUS.
Outside, the church’s walls are decked in netted shoals of fish made by adults and children in the area over the past few months. Below them there are specially made beaches with safe sand for children to play in.
NEIFCA are proud to have played a supporting role in the set up of the event, and raising awareness of Marine Conservation within the community.
