How do I apply for a Permit?
Using the link on our website under the section APPLY FOR IT. Select the permit you require which will take you to the permit portal. Once you have set up an account, your permit will always be accessible using the portal. If you have any queries, please contact us.

I can’t log onto the portal, what should I do?
If you have already previously set up an account, please use the FORGOT PASSWORD button to reset your password. For a new account, please follow the instructions on screen. Please contact the office if you have any queries.
I don’t have a computer, how do I apply?

Which Permit applies to me?
It is a stipulation of applying for a Permit that you read the relevant byelaws, these can be found on our website. These give an indication of which Permit you will need for the activity you are undertaking. If you are unsure, please contact the office.
Do I need to submit a catch return?
If you hold a Commercial Permit, you would need to submit a monthly catch return, information of which would have been provided at the time the permit was sent. Catch returns should be completed, in the first instance, on the NEIFCA portal. Information can be found under the SUBMIT A RETURN section of our website.
Where can I read the full byelaws and associated Permit conditions?
The full byelaw and Permit conditions can be found on our website www.ne-ifca.gov.uk. Alternatively, please contact the office and we can email or post paper copies to you.
What should I do if I don’t understand the byelaw or any information?
In the first instance refer to our web pages for information, at www.ne-ifca.gov.uk and if you still require help then call and speak to one our officers on 01482 393515.
I do not use pots to catch shellfish, do I need a Permit?
Yes, if you are taking shellfish from inside the NEIFCA district you will need to obtain a permit.
Does it apply to recreational fishers?
Yes, you will need a Recreational Shellfish Permit. This gives you an entitlement to take upto 2 lobster, 10 crab and/or 30 whelk per day using any method (pots, nets, gathering etc)
How long will my Permit last?
Usually Permits are issued for a year. Reminder emails/letters will be sent to notify Permit Holders to renew. Please check your Permit letter for more information.
NEIFCA Commercial, Trawl and Recreational Shellfish Permits are currently free to obtain. Charging for permits will come into force from 2027
Who applies for the Permit?
Commercial & Trawl Permits must be applied for by the owner of the vessel. Recreational Shellfish Permits are personal permits allocated to an individual.
Can a boat have more than one Permit?
No, only one permit per category will be issued for each vessel.
I’ve lost my tags, what do I do?
Please contact the office for assistance with replacements.
Do I need escape gaps on hobby pots?
Yes, all pots need to have escape gaps.
