DEFRA Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs)

Posted on 4th May 2023

What Are Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs)?

FMPs are a new way to manage our fisheries outside the EU. They are evidence-based action plans that will chart a course to deliver truly sustainable fisheries and will:

  • describe aims for our fisheries and the actions needed to achieve those aims.
  • set out policies to restore stocks to, or maintain them at, sustainable levels, within maximum sustainable yield or suitable equivalent.
  • allow for more flexible management that is tailored to particular species, type of fishing or region.

Why do we need FMPs?

We need a better way to manage our fisheries and make them more sustainable. We need to use better evidence, have the fishing industry more involved and take more responsibility for sustainability.
